Run Wilmslow for charity.....

The Charity chosen to benefit from the 2010 Wilmslow Half Marathon is Mencap.

MENCAP

We are delighted to be benefiting from the Wilmslow Half Marathon and all funds raised will be used to provide our services to people with learning disability in the region.

About Mencap
Mencap is the voice of learning disability. Everything we do is about valuing and supporting people with a learning disability and their families and carers.

“Victoria was rushed into A&E after a series of seizures. She wasn't responding to medication and needed to be put on a ventilator. The doctor came up and spoke to us. It took me a moment to realise that he was questioning whether we should go ahead with treating Victoria. He was suggesting that it wasn't worth trying to save her..”
- Jean, Victoria's mother

Too often, people with a learning disability are treated as second class citizens. That's why Mencap is here.

There are 200,000 children and adults with a learning disability in the North West.
Most people don't understand that people with a learning disability find it harder than others to learn, understand or communicate. And very few know that it is caused by how the brain develops, either before, during or after birth, or that it is always lifelong.

Therefore, people with a learning disability are among the most excluded people in today's society. Most are treated as 'different' and do not have the same control over their own lives as other members of our society.

Mencap believes everyone deserves equal rights and chances. That's why we fight to change laws and challenge prejudice. And that's why we provide services, in things like housing, employment, education and personal support that give thousands of people in the North West, the chance to live their lives as they choose.

People with a learning disability are one of the most isolated groups in our society, routinely excluded from fully interacting with their local community.

Mencap is needed more than ever before.

Every week in the UK 200 babies are born with a learning disability; they will face discrimination throughout their life

8 out of 10 children with a learning disability are bullied because of their disability

1 in 2 families with a disabled child live in poverty

Less than 1 in 5 people with a learning disability work, compared with 1 in 2 disabled people generally.
